A History of Knox and Lewis Counties, Missouri, by Hazel Bledsoe Smith, 1992.
"Samuel E. Cheatum was born to Archibald and Ester Cheatum on  March 29, 1825 in Kentucky. He had two brothers, Rice and George; and four sisters, Elizabeth, Mary A., Maria, and Manirvia. They migrated from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and finally to Lewis County, Missouri.
Samuel and Mahala (first wife) had five children. Mary E., George W., Annie, Jane and Sarah. Samuel learned his father's trade of farming (Archibald was an original land owner in Montecello) and stone masonry. Mahala died in Montecello in 1854.
Mary Jane Burch was Samuel's second wife and he moved his family north to LaBelle in Reddish Township. Their children were Nancy E., William H., Catherine, Samuel Daniel, John, Emily, Josephine, Rose, and Tom Archie.
Their family moved to Edina before all the children were born. Samuel served in the Civil War for a few months. The Masonic Lodge began in 1868 and he was admitted in that year. Samuel was one of whom laid bricks to build buildings on the west side of 'Town Square'. He ran for sheriff on the Greenback ticket, and owned a farm south of Edina.
Samuel died December 3, 1883. He was buried in the Linville Cemetery; later to be joined by his wife, Mary Jane, June 25, 1910.

Notes on Archibald CHEATUM/CHEATHAM:

I believe that Archibald's parents lived along the Rockfish River and its tributary streams, including Meriwether Branch in Virginia, before moving to Lincoln Co, KY about 1806-1809. The Rockfish River formed most of the line between Albemarle and Amherst Counties. When Nelson County was formed between the two counties from the northern half of Amherst ca 1803, the River formed a large part of the border between Albemarle and Nelson Counties in Virginia.

Leonard (with sister Esther and brother Robin/Robert) may have been children of Josiah CHEATHAM's 1st marriage. It appears they may have then lived with their grandparents Edward and Mary CHEATHAM after Josiah was widowed, and continued living with Edward and Mary (who was widowed by 1788) after Josiah remarried. Josiah's 2nd wife Lucy contested his will in 1793.

Among those families likely traveling together  or moving serially from VA to KY were Obediah MARTIN, Richard HARE, William SUDDETH/SUDDITH/SUDDARTH and his wife Alos (Alice) CHEATHAM, THURMOND families, and Esther (CHEATHAM) NALLY, widow of John, with her children Edward, Joshua, NALLY, & Polly NALLY. Esther CHEATHAM NALLY married Richard BUTT in Lincoln County, KY, in 1818.

William (widower of Alice CHEATHAM) SUDDITH moved with his son Jonathan SUDDITH, to Indiana in about 1835 with Leonard and Thurza's son Archibald CHEATHUM/CHEATHAM. Archibald and Jonathan had married sisters, Esther and Elizabeth HARE (likely daughters of Richard HARE). Each had a young family and purchased public land in Bartholomew Co., IN.  Esther CHEATHAM, likely Leonard's sister, then in her 40's, married Richard BUTT in Lincoln County, KY, in 1818. Leonard and Thurza CHEATUM/CHEATHAM did not make the trip to Indiana, likely because one or both were infirm, and both died in poverty before 1850 in Lincoln Co., KY.

Leonard had financial difficulties in IN and moved first to Adams Co., IL, then on to Lewis Co., MO before 1850. The SUDDITH's remainded in IN.

It Happened 50 years ago in 1898

Provided by Rose Heritage: This article was written by my grandmother, Anna Bea Gruber McDaniel Chancellor.  I have copied it just as she has it written.

Last Saturday night July 16th the whole neighborhood around Mr. Patees farm, 5 miles northwest of Canton Mo was hunting for Bea Gruber, the lost child of Mr and Mrs Andy Gruber living in Canton.  Mrs Gruber had taken their three small children Saturday to the country home of Mr and Mrs Pete Gruber and about three o'clock in the afternoon the little 3 year old girl wandered away from the rest of the children and could not be found.  About seven thirty Sunday morning Pete Gruber found her in his brother John's hog pasture about 1 and ½ miles from his home. She had a little flower in one hand and a little stick in the other, was bareheaded and barefooted but didn't seem to be at all alarmed at her surroundings although she was delighted to see her uncle and told him she was hungry because she had not had any supper or breakfast and she was returned to her distressed parents with injury.

Part 2           Friday July 16th 1948
Mrs Bea McDaniel,

I am the same little girl that was lost 50 years ago and in my minds imagination I can see my uncle Pete riding up to me on the old brown horse and ask me where I was going and said. "Hello Bea."  I said, "Hello". and told him I was going home and he took me up on the horse in front of him and we were soon at his home where a large lady "Mrs Patee" took me up on her lap, (She was Alvie Patee's mother.) and she fed me a glass of milk with some sugar cookies in it that my aunt had made. There were about 75 men stayed out all night trying to find me and they tracked me across cornfields and through 3 hedge fences and lost my track after I left the plowed field.  I fell asleep in a little ditch. and an awful storm cloud came and blowed away without any rain so I slept until morning undisturbed and when I awoke I remember pulling a little white flower that was very hard to break off of a bush and I picked up a little dead crooked stick about like a little wren would use to build her nest with and I tho't I had something nice to bring to my mother and she pressed the flower and kept it for many years.  I told them I had climbed upon a fence and looked over into a large pond and they knew where it was and I was in the pasture where many hogs were running and would have been in great danger but a dead cow was there and they had eaten all they wanted and didnt bother  me.  I remember passing by a pig and touching it on the back. I wandered on and a large heard of fat steers belonging to Dave Long were in his pasture across the fence from me and when the saw me they went on a stampeed.

I told them about seeing a cabin made of logs and going up to the window and looking in I saw a family of colored people around the table eating and they said there were no log house anywhere in the neighborhood and it had to be that I dreamed it.  I would like to hear from someone who remembers this as it happened 50 years ago.

Elizabeth Sargent's Own Story of the Creasy Family
A few paragraphs and then:
"Now, about the Creaseys. My great granddad, Lloyd, came from Virginia  (Dad said it was a part of the state which is now West Virgina).  Lloyd's mother came with her family, either 11 children and grandpa was 13 yrs old or there 13 children and he was 11.  They said in an ox cart, (I wondered if it wasn't the same as the pioneers went to California in).  It was approximately 1830 because grandpa Lloyd died in 1909 (just before Walter was born) and he was in his 90th year.
They stopped in Illinois for a couple of years and a couple of the girls married and stayed there.
I am not certain whether they homesteaded or how they got their land.  I thought it was in Lewis Cty, Missouri.  I wrote to the county authority in Marion County, but they have any record of it.  I wrote to Lewis County, but never heard from them.
One distinguishing fact was that all her children except grandpa Lloyd had biblical names.
Her father in law came with them.  He had been in the war and had lost his toes.  Grandpa Lloyd told dad about how he hopped along on his heels.
The youngest son was Joel and he was three yrs old.  Im not sure whether that was when they left or when they got to Missouri.
Grandpa Lloyd told of how they unintentionally left Joel asleep beside a fence when he had been watching some goats and grandpa had to go back after him.
Charley Creasy's dad was one of the sons.  I never heard of any others.
Grandpa Larkin Carter and Cynthia Ann Creasey were married aproximately on April 3, 1876.  Im not Grandma Creasy was a Merrill.  She had a couple of nephews who used to stay with grandma and grandpa Carter before dad was old enough to help with the work.  Grandma and grandpa Creasy had 2 daughter, Aunt Elizabeth and Grandma and at least four sons.  Uncle John, who nerver married and used to come to our place.  Uncle Jim who lived in Oklahoma and who had several children but I never met any of them. Uncel Silas who lived with Grandpa to the last.
I went with grandma to visit great-grandpa in the spring before he died.  That was in 1909.  I remember it well, as the Mississippi River was out of its banks and we went from Woodland to Quincy on the Burlington and back on the OK ro OL to Maywood.  Both times the water was over the track and a man walked ahead of the train to be sure the track wasnt washed out.
We moved from Missouri in 1919 and I never knew much of what went on after that.  Grandma Chthia died in 1920 and Grandpa Larkin in 1936.  Grandma Laura had been married to Dr. Raines after having been a music teacher for years".

"Three brothers traveled from their birthplace in Delaware to what would become Owen County, Kentucky before 1810. They were the sons of Levin and Lydia Clifton from the Northwest Fork 100's. The first to arrive was Edward the eldest brother soon followed by Noah then youngest brother David.

Noah Clifton - Born about 1783 in Sussex County, Delaware. He died in 1824 in Owen County, Kentucky. He inherits his father's property along with brother Levin as stated in their fathers will. In 1797 he was listed as a minor and the court appointed a guardian to protect his rights. In 1804 he is listed on the Sussex County tax records. He apparently abandons his land and moves to Kentucky and joins his brother Edward before 1808.

Noah married Charlotte Osborne, daughter of Richard and Sarah. According to a deposition she gave to receive his 1812 pension they were married in her parents home in 1809, Scott County, Kentucky. Charlotte was born before 1790 in Virginia/Kentucky, died on October 22, 1876 in Owen County, Kentucky. They had 10 known children and all were mentioned in their father's will.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 55 M i. Milton CLIFTON [20] was born on October 12, 1808 in Scott County, Kentucky 33 and died on February 6, 1877 in Lewis County, Missouri 33 at age 68.

+ 57 M iii. Wyatt CLIFTON [12] was born in 1810 in Pendleton County, Kentucky and died before 1860 in Clark County, Missouri.

+ 58 F iv. Katharine CLIFTON [16] was born in 1812 in Lusby Mill, Owen County, Kentucky.

63 F ix. Nancy CLIFTON [21] was born in 1823 in Owen County, Kentucky.

Nancy married John TINGEL [516] [MRIN: 142] on August 4, 1849 in Owen County, Kentucky.

+ 64 F x. Melinda CLIFTON [18] was born in 1824 in Owen County, Kentucky.

Noah and Charlotte became active members of the Mussel Shoals Baptist Church. In 1815 records show that Noah was baptized in September that year. Their names appear in the minutes of the church until his death in 1824.

Noah received a land grant for his service in the War of 1812 and two of his sons, Milton and Wyatt move to Lee County, Iowa after their fathers death and took possession of the land. Later they move their families to Lewis and Clark County, Missouri and from census records through 1860 these children do not return to Owen County. Two other sons, Joab and Alfred, also moved from the Owen County area. After Joab's death in 1846 his wife remarries and neither she nor her children can be located after 1860. Alfred moves his family to Missouri to join his two brothers Milton and Wyatt after his first wife's death in the mid 1850s.
